Shortcuts
Getting a small, sharp GIF
GIFs are limited to 256 colours and don’t compress motion well, so they grow quickly. Keep clips short (2–6 seconds), use 10–15 frames per second and a width of 480 px or less. This tool builds a custom colour palette from your clip first (ffmpeg’s palettegen and paletteuse), which avoids the blotchy colours of quick converters.
For anything longer, MP4 or WebM is usually 5–10× smaller than a GIF and plays everywhere.
Frequently asked questions
Is my video uploaded?
No. ffmpeg runs in your browser tab and reads the file from your device. The page’s security policy doesn’t allow it to send data anywhere; the Privacy check lists every request.
Why is the first conversion slow to start?
The converter engine (32 MB) downloads once from this site. After that it’s cached by your browser.
Which formats can it read?
Almost anything FFmpeg supports: MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI, FLV, 3GP and more, including HEVC iPhone videos.
